Snap!

Every year Mencap run a photo competition called Snap!

Photos must be taken of or by a person with a learning disability, and be accompanied by a story or bit of background.

The competition is a way of promoting positive and insightful images of disability. Something that is severely lacking in both the media and in a lot of people's minds.

Photos from past competitions are available in book form from the Mencap shop. All three books are only £10 at the moment. They provide a rare insight into what it's like to be disabled or be involved in the life of a disabled person. And if you buy them you also get the warm feeling of knowing that your money has gone to charity. Go on...

Anyway, after taking some pictures at home over Christmas, I thought I'd enter this year.

I'm submitting a couple of snaps of my brother with the accompanying backstory of his love of cars.

The first picture is of him in his usual pose, looking out of his bedroom window at my car, waiting to be taken out for a drive.

The second is of him looking at a car magazine.

I like this one because he looks really happy. And also, if you were unaware of his disablity, you would just think it was a photo of someone reading an amusing article. He actually can't read at all.

Anyway, I'd highly recommend the books and would appreciate if you'd spread the word about the event. It's an important step forward in making people think positively about the disabled.
